Special to Outer Life
So I'm watching this old episode of "Seinfeld" and Jerry and Elaine are sitting at this party on Long Island that broke up hours ago. They're waiting for Kramer to pick them up because George left the party early with this woman and took Jerry's car. It's supposed to be funny because Jerry and Elaine really want to get out of there, the party hosts are staring at them wishing they would go home and no one knows where Kramer is or when he'll get there. Turns out Kramer got lost.
All I could think was "get a cell phone!"
This happens all the time. So many books, movies and TV shows made before the mid-1990s depend for their plot on one character not being able to communicate with another character at a key moment. With cell phones, IM, text messaging and blackberries and all that, this kind of stuff never happens anymore.
Unless you're in a dead spot. But how often does that happen (so long as you don't have Sprint)?
It must be hard for writers today to think of plots that don't depend on characters not being able to communicate with each other while apart. That might explain why no one's reading, sitcoms are dying and movies rely on effects instead of story.
Oh well, gotta go. My cell's ringing off the hook!
P.S. What's a hook got to do with a phone?
Teen Outer Life is the pseudonym of a teenage relative of Outer Life who thinks blogs are stupid but also thinks no one ever listens so sometimes maybe Outer Life will serve as a suitable receptacle for TOL's musings. Whatever.
