You cannot succeed if you are stupid and ugly. You might succeed if you are smart but ugly or if you are stupid but attractive. You will succeed if you are smart and attractive.
In the old days, before the machine age, the computer age and advanced ages brought on by advances in health care, you could not hope to survive, let alone succeed, without physical strength. Today that's not important, at least in the developed world.
Now that success in life boils down to being smart and/or attractive, is it any wonder that so many spend so much trying to improve their appearance? One's appearance, after all, is infinitely easier to improve than one's intelligence.
This is my new unified theory of modern life.
It doesn't paint a pretty picture, to be sure, but it explains a lot. Or, said another way, the theory is ugly but smart, so it just might succeed.
Yes. Your theory is ugly and smart. Perhaps you could slap some make-up on it and buy it a new dress?

So that's my problem...I had always wondered why...

If you substitute "ability" and "drive" for "looks" and "intellect" you have my unifying theory of life.
