What is it about the fathers in my family?
Why does one fly across the country to visit his extended family for the holidays, then refuse to set foot in his daughter's house for fear of catching his only grandson's cold?
Why does another tell us he cannot travel for the holidays because of health problems, health problems that for some reason did not prevent him from traveling even further to visit his girlfriend's family for the holidays?
Why does another arrive late for dinner, sit wordlessly while we talk around him, begin eating before everyone's been served, then sit wordlessly while we all clean up around him, not lifting a finger, and then leave just as we finish and sit down to talk?
Why does one call us up to ask what he can bring to dinner, then when we tell him a ham would be nice, responds that bringing a ham would inconvenience him too much and instead offers to bring a salad, and then shows up without any salad dressing or a bowl to serve the salad in?
If nothing else, our fathers are our teachers. How could we not learn from their example?
Any more psots like that and you'll be sent to bed without any dinner, sonny Jim young fella me lad.
